CHRISTINA GIRLS SOFTBALL RULES

Note: We follow USSSA Softball Rules with the following local exceptions. The USSSA rulebook link can be found under our Home Page, under Site Links. Mid-Season Tournament, End of Season Tournament, and All Stars will have other rules applied.

1. Home team must line the field before the game & check pitching distance.

2. Pitching distances:
a. 35' Tee Ball, CP, MM
b. 40' Minors
c. 43' Majors

3. Ball sizes:
a. 11" CP & MM
b. 12" Min & Maj

4. All volunteers (anyone that steps in the dugout or on the field) are required to apply with 
with the league and be approved by the board, complete NAYS Coach Certificate, and complete a Level 2 background check annually.

5. All games (other than tee ball) are 75 MINUTES - FINISH THE INNING WHEN TIME
EXPIRES - No new inning may start if less than 5 minutes remain in the game when the
previous full inning ends
a. Inning ends when 3 outs are made or the 5th run scores.

6. SPRING BALL ONLY – Both teams MUST keep a neat scorebook/ Every player in the
batting order MUST be listed by LAST NAME, FIRST NAME (no nicknames) and her
jersey number. Books are used for All-Star verification.
a. In SPRING BALL ONLY, the winning team must email final score to [email protected] within 24 hours for record keeping purposes

7. Maximum 10 players on defense with maximum 6 infielders at normal positions. If this
results in defensive subs, then a sub cannot sit for more than one-half inning on defense
in any one game. No player shall sit more than 1 inning a game, unless they are being
disciplined or injured/sick. All players must have an opportunity to play at least 1 inning
in the infield, per game. The general rule of thumb is at minimum 1 inning every 3
innings played. Teams must play a catcher.
a. In SPRING BALL ONLY, a team must have 6 players to play an official game.

8. Entire team bats. No penalty if a player in the lineup becomes sick or injured and cannot
bat. If a player is in the lineup, and does not show up, her spot is skipped with no
penalty. If the player shows up late, she must bat in her designated spot and there is no
penalty if her spot comes up before she arrives.

9. No limit on bases taken on overthrows in MM, Min and Maj. One base in tee ball and
coach pitch.

10. Defensively - natural softball plays allowed. Umpire discretion is applied.
a. Ex: Players should not be running around/by other position players to make other
position plays
b. Ex: A player fielding a ball can make a tag/play on a runner in any base line or
any base, if the ball and her momentum is naturally leading her in that direction.

11. Games may end in a tie.

12. If a game is suspended before two complete innings it is not official, and the game will
resume from the point of suspension. Check home team book for accuracy before
leaving the park.

13. If a game is suspended after two complete innings, it is official and considered finished.
The final score reverts to the score at the last completed full inning.

14. There are free defensive substitutions for all players.

15. 10U & above - ONLY one defensive coach is permitted on the field near the dugout
fence to instruct the pitcher and other players. All other coaches MUST be in the dugout.

16. If a team needs pickup players to play a game, then the team can use any Christina
registered player who is from the same division or BELOW. If a player is age eligible but
plays up, then that player cannot play down to be a pickup player. In SPRING BALL
ONLY, the pickup player must bat last in the order and must play outfield. A team may
pick up only enough players to reach a lineup of 9. If a team has 9 players, then it cannot
pick up any players.

17. Metal cleats permitted for 18u only during regular season games. All tournaments will
require non-metal cleats.

18. All batting helmets must have a face guard.

19. All infielders must wear a face mask.

20. All players warming up a pitcher must wear a catcher or batting helmet.

21. If a player or coach is ejected, the ejected person is suspended for the next game. The
ejected person must leave the Christina Softball complex immediately. Umpires should
report ejections to the board in writing. If a player or coach is ejected twice in a season,
they will be suspended for five consecutive games, and the Executive Board will meet to
consider additional punishments, including longer suspension. Barring extraordinary
circumstances, a coach who is ejected twice in a season will be prohibited from coaching
in the next scheduled Christina season.

22. There is no smoking or use of tobacco products inside the complex. This policy refers to
chewing tobacco, cigars, cigarettes and vaping devices of any kind.

23. Umpires have the authority to eject any player, coach or spectator who is displaying
unsportsmanlike behavior or who is being abusive or unduly disruptive. The umpire may
warn the offending party prior to ejection and may request the assistance of a coach or
coaches to control the offending party. If ejected, the person must leave the complex.

24. Umpires have been told to eject anyone who uses profane or obscene language.

25. If a coach believes an umpire is wrong about a Christina rule, the coach should request
a conference with the umpire and the opposing head coach to discuss. If the dispute still
exists after the conference, then the coach should report the issue with details via email
